Why it matters?
The goal
Our Mission
At Dope Black Women, our mission is to create safe spaces, foster meaningful connections, and provide essential support for Black women worldwide. We aim to address the unique challenges Black women face by offering resources, advocacy, and opportunities for growth and empowerment.
The driving force
The Problem
Black women across the globe face systemic discrimination and challenges in various aspects of their lives, including work, mental health, and personal safety. Data from the Mental Health Foundation suggests that one in three Black people have experienced feelings of loneliness, compared to one in four in the general population. This highlights the significant impact of social isolation and lack of community support on the mental well-being of Black individuals, particularly Black women. Furthermore, Black women face obstacles in professional growth and development, as evidenced by their underrepresentation in senior management positions and limited access to professional opportunities.
While 1.3% of UK-born White men are in the top 1% professionally, the figure drops significantly to 0.2% for UK-born White women and less than 0.1% for UK-born Black women. This disparity highlights the systemic barriers and discriminatory practices that hinder the career advancement of Black women in the workplace. Black women are three times more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than women of other racial groups, and one in five will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Over 50% of Black women in the UK have quit jobs due to racism, with 78% reporting job burnout, reflecting pervasive institutional discrimination and a lack of supportive workplace environments. The historical legacy of colonialism and the resulting diaspora have disconnected Black women from their cultural roots and communities, creating a sense of isolation and fragmentation. There is a critical need to address this disconnection and provide Black women with a space to connect, learn, heal, and thrive.
The aims
Our vision
We aim to empower Black women by organising intimate retreats that focus on financial, physical, and mental wellness, and by offering six months of therapy to vulnerable women in need. We also plan to expand our WhatsApp community globally and launch programmes in the US. To boost sustainability and focus on our mission, we will recruit a social media team, podcast producer, event manager, and bid writers.
